Behind the Wire

6 inches by 8 inches, original oil painting

by Deborah Grayson Lincoln

Artist Commentary:

"Much has been said about barbed wire - pro and con. I prefer to see it as a positive - defining boundaries and keeping those inside safe - when it is respected. But like many good things, it can cause damage when it not used correctly or isn't respected. Most of my animals have no problem staying within its confines.
Years ago, however, a neighbor's overly-amorous bull had no respect for the wire at all - neither barbed or electrified. Raising the fence, reinforcing the fence and even adding 2 strands of electricity failed to prevent him from getting to one of our lovely Simmentals - TWICE! In the interest of remaining neighborly, we calmly penned the bull and called the neighbor to retrieve him while silently threatening to put him in the freezer should he return for a third adventure (the bull, NOT the neighbor!). Happy ending - the bull got sold and his successors have been kept at bay."
